OfS Waltham Forest assessment connects student feedback with visible action

Updated Nov 06, 2026

The Office for Students published the OfS Waltham Forest assessment on 22 October 2026. For quality teams, its practical value is the connection between student input, formal records and visible responses. It offers a concrete example to consider when reviewing how feedback informs local decisions.

What the OfS Waltham Forest assessment found

The assessors found credible student-engagement plans under condition B2, as part of their assessment of initial registration condition B7. The independent team submitted its findings to inform the OfS’s registration decision for the college.

The report's student-engagement section, pages 21–22 records student input into learning-space design in committee minutes, and posters showing responses to feedback. It also describes planned unit questionnaires and existing named and anonymous feedback routes.

What this means for institutions

Our recommendation is to test whether a colleague could follow a local decision from the original issue to the response. For a learning-space project, retain the questions asked, the participating groups, the options considered and the reasons for the chosen design. Record constraints and unresolved requests alongside completed changes.

Ask student representatives to review that account. Can they recognise the issue they raised, and can students outside the committee find the response? Our guide to student voice and shared decisions explains how feedback, representation and partnership can contribute at different stages. Give students a way to challenge the institution's interpretation.

Separate delivery from evaluation. Opening a revised study space records an action; finding out whether it meets students' needs requires follow-up. Agree when to revisit the issue and which groups to involve. For planned courses or new intakes, label arrangements as planned until there is evidence that they operated.

How student feedback analysis connects

For institutions collecting open-text comments, we suggest preserving the source question and collection period alongside each reported theme. Keep requests for quiet study, accessible equipment and group working distinct where they imply different decisions. Our open-text analysis methodology explains how to organise the analysis and retain a clear record of the evidence.

Before a theme enters a committee paper, have an authorised reviewer check the supporting comments and any conflicting accounts. Document exclusions and protect identifying details when sharing examples. The student comment analysis governance checklist covers those methodological and reporting decisions. Analysis can inform a response; record separately what was agreed, delivered and subsequently reviewed.

FAQ

Q: What should Student Experience and quality teams do now?

A: Choose a recent decision informed by feedback and review the record with students. Check that the evidence, decision owner, response and follow-up are identifiable. Address missing links in that process before adding another survey.

Q: When did the assessment take place?

A: The visit took place on 2 and 3 June 2026; publication followed on 22 October 2026.

Q: What should this prompt teams to ask about student voice?

A: Ask whether students can explain how their contribution influenced a decision, including where a request was not adopted. A published response should leave room for disagreement and further review. Use it to continue the conversation about what students need. The QAA student partnership report and our closing the feedback loop pathway provide useful companions.
