QAA student partnership report finds gaps in feedback follow-through
Updated Nov 06, 2026
The QAA student partnership report identifies a gap between collecting feedback and demonstrating what happens next. Announced on 29 October 2026 by the Quality Assurance Agency, it recognises established engagement routes but finds less consistent evidence of analysis, action and communication back to students. Quality teams can use it to review where that chain breaks locally.
What the QAA student partnership report adds
The full report examines 35 review reports published in the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26, covering UK and international provision. It considers institutional strategy, representative systems and diverse student voices against the Quality Code's principle on engaging students as partners.
QAA describes feedback informing curriculum, teaching, assessment and support changes. Alongside those strengths, its announcement highlights inconsistent institutional approaches, uneven participation and weaknesses in reporting responses. The concern is how engagement routes work together and lead to action.
The report also describes informal conversations that resolve concerns quickly but can bypass institutional recording and analysis. That makes the handover between informal conversations and formal review a useful place to examine locally.
What this means for institutions
Our recommendation is to trace a recent issue through the local feedback process with student representatives. Start with what students raised, then find the analysis, decision, responsible team and response. If the record stops at a committee discussion, agree what needs to happen next and when progress will be checked.
Include concerns resolved informally in that review. For example, a tutor may clarify confusing assessment instructions immediately. Consider how to record the underlying issue and response without circulating identifiable student accounts. Ask whether other modules need the same clarification. A short shared record can help the next team pick up the issue.
Give students a role in interpreting the issue and reviewing the response. Our guide to feedback, representation and partnership distinguishes those contributions. Ask participants whose experiences may be missing, and offer a way to contribute outside a scheduled meeting. A complete action log still needs scrutiny from the people affected.
How student feedback analysis connects
For open-text comments, we suggest retaining the question, collection period, population and analysis method alongside each theme. Have authorised reviewers examine ambiguous comments and evidence that challenges the main interpretation. Our NSS open-text analysis methodology sets out how to document and review that analysis.
Then connect the analysis to a decision record: what will be investigated or changed, who owns the response and how students will hear it. After a change, return to students to ask whether it addressed the issue. For example, ask them to review the clarity of a revised assessment brief. The student comment analysis governance checklist offers prompts for documenting checks, access and reporting limits.
FAQ
Q: What should Student Experience and quality teams do now?
A: Choose a recent feedback issue and review its progress with students. Identify any missing decision, owner or update, then agree how to check the response. Use that review to improve the existing process.
Q: When was the report published, and what does it cover?
A: QAA lists publication on 29 October 2026. It covers UK and international review reports published in the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26. The student partnership pathway offers related reading on involving students in decisions.
Q: How should institutions judge whether feedback has led to improvement?
A: Agree what evidence would show a useful change before implementing it. Revisit the issue with students afterwards, record unresolved concerns and consider other explanations for any change in responses. Reporting an action and evaluating its effects are separate tasks.
