Jisc refreshes AI literacy training for university staff
Updated Nov 06, 2026
Jisc’s refreshed AI literacy offer gives university staff distinct learning routes for professional services and teaching. Its professional services curriculum and teaching and learning curriculum connect practical use with critical evaluation.
Choose the route that matches the work
The professional services programme comprises three sessions: understanding AI, ethical and responsible use, and practical skills. It includes AI assistants and agentic AI alongside everyday information and communication tasks.
The teaching pathway has three modules covering foundations, applied skills and responsible use. Its topics include accessibility, learning materials, assessment, privacy and evaluation of outputs. Both pages provide live-session and booking information for the 2026–27 offer; use those pages for current availability.
Bring a real task to the training
Our suggestion for a university team is to choose one bounded task before attending. For a survey team, this might be preparing a synthetic example for a reporting discussion. For a course team, it might be reviewing the clarity of an assessment instruction.
Write down what a useful result would contain and who will judge it. Use approved material and the institution’s agreed tools. Keep a comparison with the existing process so that the review can consider the work saved, the work added and the quality of the result.
Make the review part of the workflow
Give a reviewer a short checklist tied to the task. Are factual statements supported? Is the intended audience clear? Has the output changed the meaning of the source material? Can the next colleague understand how it was produced?
Record changes made during review. A plausible first draft is only one stage of the work; the handover should identify the final version and the person responsible for it.
Share what the team learns
After training, document the task, approved inputs, review steps and a worked example colleagues can inspect. Decide whether to adopt the workflow, revise it or leave it for further investigation.
For student comment analysis, start with the synthetic worked example and the governance checklist. The digital learning pathway connects these questions with wider teaching and student experience reading.
